Ensuring a democratic United Nations Security Council

African Parliamentary Alliance for UN Reforms (APAUNR) is an African group of parliamentarians with the support of experts from politics, academia, traditional institutions and civil society, that seek to find paths for action in synergy, to ensure the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is democratic, accountable, efficient, effective, united, and above all, capable of protecting with impartiality the interest of every global citizen irrespective of their colour, nationality, ethnicity, linguistic heritage, sex, gender, religion or age.

We recognise that despite its primary responsibility  to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war and the maintenance of international peace and security, UNSC only addresses the strategic interests and political motives of its Permanent Five (P-5) members.

Today, the world’s highest security institution is suffering from gridlock, political sclerosis and does not represent the realities of the international community in the 21st century.

By blocking motions and preventing multilateralism that is based on democratically-evolved global consensus to act proactively and effectively, P-5 Members cover up for each other, deny the sad reality of the spiralling human catastrophe the world over, and hinder the international community’s ability to address burning issues that affect the lives of millions.

We strongly believe the responsibility to reform the world’s highest security institution is not only one for governments, but for all who care and desire a better and just world for all humanity.

So, outraged by this moral travesty, we are inventing new forms of collective action, from local level to global scale, so that together we can galvanise international support that would compel world powers to embark on a comprehensive reform of the UNSC, as well as the revitalisation of the work of the General Assembly - for a world where all can live in security and dignity, proud of who they are and wherever they are.
